Can they skip the interview?

Since October 1, 2025, nearly everyone must interview in person, including applicants over 79. The B visa exception left is a renewal where all of these are true:

  • Renewing a B-1, B-2 or B1/B2 visa within 12 months of the old visa’s expiry
  • The old visa was issued for full validity (for Chinese citizens, the 10-year visa)
  • They were at least 18 when it was issued
  • Applying in their country of nationality or usual residence
  • Never refused a visa (unless the refusal was overcome or waived)
  • No apparent or potential ineligibility

Even if they qualify, the consular officer can still require an interview. Mission China also notes that applicants under 14 must now interview with a parent.

These tips are practical advice drawn from the official guidance (applicants qualify on their own ties; a letter is not needed). Interview language and 214(b) re-application details are general experience, not an official statement.

Where to apply in China

We don’t show wait times here because they change every month. Use the State Department’s Global Visa Wait Times tool and pick the city.

Visa integrity fee Unverified, check before relying on it

$250 “visa integrity fee” enacted by Public Law 119-21 (July 2025), charged at visa issuance, indexed to inflation and cannot be waived. After the visa expires, DHS may refund it to visitors who followed the visa’s conditions and left no later than 5 days after their authorized stay ended. As of Oct 18, 2026 it is not listed on the State Department’s visa fee page, and we could not confirm on an official page that collection has started.
